General Real Estate License Requirements in California

  • To be eligible to become a licensed salesperson in California, you must meet the state's age requirement of 18 years or older.
  • Becoming licensed in California does not require residency, but out-of-state applicants may need to comply with additional criteria.
  • Candid disclosure is key: any attempt to withhold criminal history or disciplinary action from license applications may result in an automatic denial. For more insights, be sure to consult Avoid Potential Denial of Your License Application (RE 229) and Applicant Eligibility Information (RE 222).
  • There is no limit to the number of QE hours that may be taken online.
  • Courses must be completed within 1 year of the enrollment date.
  • Students must demonstrate their mastery of the course material by spending at least 18 days completing all units, unit quizzes and subsequent activities before they are eligible to take a first attempt at the final exam. With this approach, students can be confident that credit earned is truly reflective of learning achieved.
  • Students must wait 18 days before they can retry the course final exam if their initial attempt is unsuccessful. Make sure to study hard and pass it on the first try!
  • If a student fails the final exam twice, they won't receive class credit and will need to register for it again.
